Deadpool & Wolverineis much more than the extension of a franchise or the beginning of a new era. The film exists within itself, in a pocket dimension of its own making, where words are left unspoken and feelings are dealt with the clashes of claws and katanas.

The simplicity of this story mired in so much lore and history — not only between the comic-book journey of the characters but the 15-year-long friendship of the actors as well — culminates in this single movie.Deadpool & Wolverineis not a Marvel movie. It is inherently, essentially, at its core, a star-crossed love story that has been decades in the making.

Deadpool & WolverineRelives the Fate of Romeo & Juliet

Ryan Reynoldsand Deadpool were both lost at sea afterHugh Jackman’s Wolverine hung up his claws at the end ofLogan. After pining away for an entire film in 2016 and blowing himself up in the opening sequence of his sequel in 2018, his love finally bears fruit as Wolverine — claws, spandex, grunts, and all — graces the lovelorn Merc with one final adventure.

But for some fans, that might not be enough. Starved for attention after Marvel’s recent downfall, anything less than perfect is met with sneers, jeers, and outright hatred. And so, the true meaning behind the movie escapes most fans who have not bothered enough to make themselves familiar with the behind-the-scenes lore of Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and their respective IPs.

As such, haters have resorted to review-bombing the film to soothe their personal vendetta against Marvel. While the pettiness behind such motives seldom bubbles to the surface, some fans do see past the haze of hatred surrounding it all. In the words of one sufficiently disappointed Reddit user,Jimrodsdisdain:“I’m beginning to think these bad reviews are revenge reviews.”

One level-headed fan, however,writes:“81% critics score [on] Rotten Tomatoes. All the bad reviews are basically saying, ‘I don’t get it so I don’t like it.’” Although this may be true, only time will tell if the audience’s love for the lore can surpass their ambition for the overarching interconnected universe of a billion-dollar Hollywood franchise.

Deadpool & WolverineClears Up a Misunderstanding

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’sDeadpool & Wolverinenever held any false pretenses and made no fraught promises. The audience, on the other hand, bestowed the film with pockets full of hope, anticipation, and promises. After Marvel sufficiently massacred its own lineage in the past 6 years, the film arrives just as the franchise is about to hit rock bottom, justifiably crowning itself in the process as the franchise’s lord and savior.

However, no amount of weighted responsibility and audience expectation can diminish whatDeadpool & Wolverineinherently represents — outrageous (often borderline offensive) hilarity and unbridled chaos.

It promises the adventure of a lifetime while staring down a billion-dollar franchise, taunting Feige by labeling itself as Marvel Jesus and waltzing right on to celebrate the epic bromantic saga of a smitten Deadpool and his era-defining love for Wolverine. And if that betrays the preconceived expectations of the audience, Deadpool should only be glad to send the haters on their way with enough chimichangas to keep the trolls company on their late-night missions of review-bombing his version of Romeo & Juliet.
