My Hero Academiamay have gotten the short end of the stick but that doesn’t mean that Kohei Horikoshi did everything wrong with the series. The ending has been receiving an unfair amount of hate ever since the final chapter of the manga came out. While it may not have been everything the fans wanted, it wasn’t the worst possible conclusion either.

It is an art to make one’s characters recognizable. A story can be both memorable and forgettable but it is the characters who, if written well, have their own individuality outside of the original material as well. This helps them gain recognition even amongst those who don’t know much about the subject.

Kohei Horikoshi’s Recognizable Characters

Masashi Kishimoto and Eiichiro Oda were perhaps amongst the first few to have nailed the key to making distinguished antagonists and characters. To recognize a character just by their looks and features is a unique skill that helps them stand out. Characters such as Pain, the Akatsuki, Doflamingo, Whitebeard and so many others have features that define them regardless of how impactful they may be.

Like Toga’s hair resembling a spider lily. This way when you are talking to a friend and forget the character’s name you can always say, ‘Oh that one with the burned skin.’

During a brief interview with Jump Giga (viaX),Kohei Horikoshitalked about this exact unique trait in storytelling. To recognize a character by their visual outlook helps set up an entirely different kind of aesthetic and reputation for them.

To come up with such unique designs, it becomes important to exclusively think outside the box. Characters that stand out to such an extent get remembered in one way or another and their unusual features contribute to that just as much.

My Hero Academia’s Distinguished Villains

My Hero Academiais already unique with the many places it takes inspiration from. The superhero world mixed with the themes of a Shonen manga create a story that is easily capable of making it worthy of its fame. To top it all off, the antagonists all have an aura that exudes danger.

It helps make them terrifying and memorable at the same time. They leave a mark because of just how different they look. It isn’t an easy trait either, to create villains of such a presence that even their name isn’t needed to mark their existence.

It is said that the value of a name can shake worlds, but in the case of Eiichiro Oda, Masashi Kishimoto, and Kohei Horikoshi, an image alone can turn things around. Crafting villains that are so horrifying that even the audiences feel it, is a skill not many have been able to master.
