Despite her current image among her fans, J.K. Rowling is still one of the biggest authors in the world and with theHarry Potterfranchise, because one of the highest-paid writers. The fantasy novel series has sold over 600 million copies worldwide and spawned a film franchise that is currently being rebooted into a series.

Michael Gambon as Professor Dumbledore

Like any other artist, Rowling used many of her personal experiences to write the franchise, including some of the characters. When asked if there was any teacher in her life like Professor Dumbledore or McGonagall who encouraged her to write, Rowling credited many of her school teachers, but one in particular for teaching her a lot about life.

J.K. Rowling revealed the teacher who inspired her to create a character like Professor Dumbledore

Professor Dumbledore is one of the most iconic characters in pop culture history. Although a tad bit biased, thelate Head Master of Hogwartsdid everything in his power to safeguard Harry Potter from Lord Voldemort as he was the only one capable of frightening the Dark Lord. He also shared a mentor-like relationship with Harry and taught him a lot.

While Dumbledore has been criticized over the years (especially for his sudden s*xuality reveal), he is still one of the good guys and has protected Harry as well as he could. His death inHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeis a devastating blow to the entire Order and to Harry himself as he is left alone to deal with the Dark Lord.

AuthorJ.K. Rowlinghas often revealed the real-life inspirations behind her stories and she credited many of her primary school teachers as the reference to the professors at Hogwarts when asked about the same. However, she mentioned one particular literature teacher as a standout among them. Talking toBeyond the Page, she said,

I had a teacher when I was a little older called Lucy Shepherd… she was teaching me when I was in my teens and she was a fantastic English teacher. Like Dumbledore and McGonagall in the books, she taught me things in addition to what she was teaching me about literature. Things about life you know? She was just a very good example of a woman who was very smart and someone who would stick up for herself and her principles and that was a great role model.

Rowling also mentioned that she remembered her name clearly because she had met her recently at an event and Shepherd had attended it.

J.K. Rowling in an interview

J.K. Rowling revealed that the books initially started with one of the most important scenes in the story instead of Privet Drive

The opening lines ofHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonedescribing the Dursleys’ neighborhood of No.4, Privet Drive is a classic and has been quoted so many times by Potterheads. The first chapter sees the immediate aftermath of Lord Voldemort’s first defeat at the hands of baby Harry’s love charm set by his mother and Vernon Dursley’s reaction to it.

However, the first book would reportedly have begun with the incident at Godric’s Hollow itself as J.K. Rowling revealed that the first lines she ever wrote about were the home of the Potters where they would soon meet their death. However, she later changedit to Privet Drive, and the Godric’s Hollow incident is revealed by Hagrid much later. She said,

The first sentence I wrote…if we’re setting aside the preliminary notes that I made. It was so different from the first sentence that appeared in the printed books…I can’t quote it exactly but it was to do with a place called Darks Hollow. And, Darks Hollow became Godric’s Hollow so in the very first ever version of Chapter 1 of Harry Potter the Philosopher’s Stone you saw what happened in Godric’s Hollow.

An own on top of the Privet Drive sign

The current first chapter of the novel series begins in a familiar setting for the general audience, with plenty of humor and bizarre thrown in to gently nudge them into the Wizarding World. While the Godric’s Hollow scene might have been a harrowing start to the series, what it ended up being was far better.
