There are many rumors surrounding the cast of theThe Terminatorseries, particularly Arnold Schwarzenegger. During various interviews, the director James Cameron even talked about being unsure about casting the actor as his lead.
Fortunately, he took the leap of faith and fans saw the amazing cybernetic android. However, this wasn’t the case for his co-star Robert Patrick, who played T-1000 in the second movie.The X-Filesactor believed that he was the best suited for the role just like Schwarzenegger was the best Terminator.

Playing a prototype of the beloved Terminator might have seemed challenging, but the actor didn’t fret.
Talking to theDen Of Geek, theDie Hard 2actor stated he was very aware of the importance of the film and his role in it. He recalled being in awe of the special effects works and being reminded of everyone’s contribution to the historic characters and movie.
I think it was many things. I was an interesting-looking young man at the time – physically, the way I carried myself, how skinny I was, the way my face looked, my ears, me eyes…you know, the whole nine yards.
Referencing the interviewer’s question of what inspired the director to select him for the special role, he answered boldly. Patrick confessed that theAvatarfilmmaker was convinced due to his physical peculiarity.
A totally inspired casting decision; similar to an Arnold and yet totally dissimilar in size and stature. I think he [Cameron] always described me as a cross between David Bowie and James Dean, some sort of a hybrid of the two…
TheStripteaseactor called it an inspired decision, stating that the director knew he found what he was looking for. He even said that just likeArnold Schwarzeneggerbest suited his role, he was also made to portray T-1000.
An unsure decision that had the best outcome
On the other hand, Cameron didn’t have that much confidence in Schwarzenegger for the first movie, at least initially. In an interview withEmpire, theAliensdirector shockingly confessed that he didn’t want to cast the actor.
Because I didn’t want Arnold in the movie. I didn’t want him to play Reese. It didn’t make any sense. This was coming from on high at Orion that Arnold should play Reese. It was just a stupid idea.
He went on to reveal that the role of Kyle Reese (later portrayed byMichael Biehn) was being pushed for theTotal Recallactor. He also pointed out the fact that the former struggled with his dialogues and didn’t fit his vision for the titular role either.
I wasn’t thinking of him as The Terminator. We had talked briefly about the idea about six months before, myself and Gale, and we thought, man, maybe not. It didn’t fit our vision.
However, later on, the filmmaker met thePredatorlead for lunch and had a premonition while the latter was rambling about the script. Cameron confessed that he soon came to realize that Schwarzenegger would play the part differently than what he envisioned but he wanted to take the chance.

This way the actor was cast as one of his most iconic roles, which later skyrocketed him to fame as a leading hero. On the contrary, Patrick’s circumstances were different as his mannerisms and appearance had charmed the filmmaker from early on.
