James Gunn delivered a slew of updates for some of the DCU’s upcoming projects, such as Superman, Supergirl, Creature Commandos, and Lanterns. While there are some exciting ideas that Gunn threw around, there is one thing that he said that may not sit well with fans after all.

Lanterns is set to feature Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, teaching Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart what it means to be a Green Lantern. However, while the average viewer would have conceived of this story to be a space opera on the scale of Gunn’s work with Guardians of the Galaxy, instead, Gunn has decided to take a radical route with Laterns, something that might seem more at home with a Batman or Green Arrow story.
Lanterns is going to be a grounded story set on Earth
James Gunnhas decided to take an odd approach withLanterns, setting them up for a more grounded story with his HBO series. Given that this will probably be Hal Jordan’s introduction to the DCU, fans might have expected something to do with the larger Lantern mythos, as opposed to something that sticks so closely to Earth. Even Gunn admitted, speaking toTHR, that it was an odd choice for the series. He said:
When we first started the DCU, the first couple of weeks of heading this out, we got together with a group of writers, and Tom King was one of those writers, and we were in this room, and we came up with sort of this concept for Lanterns. It’s a much more it’s a very grounded series, a very real series, which is a strange thing to say about a Green Lanterns show. But it’s going to be something like nobody’s ever seen before.

However, it makes sense that an older Hal Jordan will decide to stay on planet Earth while trying to train the newly minted Green Lantern, John Stewart. Given that Green Lanterns are given entire sectors in the cosmos to protect, Jordan might think it’s best that his rookie starts small, eventually building up to bigger threats in the universe, while also expanding his beat.
Kyle Chandler is no stranger to training amateurs
Kyle Chandler’sFriday Night Lightssaw the actor take the lead role as a football coach in a make-it-or-break-it situation with his football team. Given that the actor already has experience playing mentor figures, having a grounded film on Earth that has high stakes for his rookie is somewhere that the actor could actually shine.
Given that Kyle Chandler is almost 60 years old, an elder Hal Jordan will probably be more experienced than most other iterations of him that fans have seen on screen. While Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern might not be part of the Justice League of the DCU, it makes more sense for John Stewart to be a part of the team anyway, given that Gunn will be taking some inspiration from the seminal DCAU. However, an older Hal opens up a lot of possibilities for the Lanterns in the DCU, including the existence of Hal Jordan’s version of Parallax.
