When books are being adapted into a live-action medium, it is only natural that some changes will be made to better tell a story. When theHarry Potterfilms first began to take shape, it was only natural that a similar approach was taken with them. Although J.K. Rowling made most of the decisions that were taken in the films, some choices ended up being quite controversial among the fandom.
Be it Dumbledore’s reaction to Harry putting his name in the Goblet of Fire or Ginny Weasley’s character, certain changes have been poorly received by its viewers over the years. One of the lesser talked about decisions still ended up impacting characters in a very significant way. Thankfully, HBO’s upcoming reboot could easily fix this.
Older and Wiser or Older and Inaccurate?
Although the casting in theHarry Potterfilms was excellent in many ways, there was one specific part that made many fans upset. The ages of Harry’s parents, Severus Snape, and the rest of the Marauders, have become quite a controversial decision on the creator’s part.
In the books, Lily and James Potter are supposed to be only 21 years old when they die. While the world does have a lot of magic, no amount of spells could convince viewers that Geraldine Somerville and Adrian Rawlins were playing 21-year-olds when the first movie came out. In actuality, both were 34 and 43, respectively, causing many to wonder why such a decision was taken.

It would seem that the cause of Harry having such old-looking young parents was due to the casting of Alan Rickman in the role of Severus Snape. The decision to have him in the film was a decision by J.K. Rowling, according toCollider. It would seem that the writer desperately wanted him to be a part of the project; he was the inspiration behind the character when she was writing him.
While the casting was excellent, the actor was 55 when filming on the first film started, causing a snowball effect with the entire class.

However, the aging up of several characters as a result of it caused quite a lot of confusionamong fans. Although not much is known of it within the franchise, fans have created an entire story surrounding the Marauders.
With this, many feel robbed to know characters like Lily, James, Sirius, and Remus were drastically aged up. A lot of dynamics were lost, and rather than actually being characters of their own with their own stories, they became aids to Harry’s.

Since HBO has a blank slate with their reboot of the franchise, they could right this wrong and not make the same mistakes that the original series did. Not only would fans be appreciative of it, but it would also help flesh out their characters more, giving them more depth and exploring their years in Hogwarts as well.
