Sony’s strategy in 2024 continues to raise eyebrows, especially after the disastrous release of theUntil Dawnremake on the PlayStation 5 and PC. The once-beloved horror title has now become an example of how poorly made remakes and remasters can go wrong with players.

A still from Until Dawn

Its weak debut has placed it even belowConcord, a game that failed so spectacularly it was removed from digital storefronts within weeks. This situation brings into question the handling of remakes and the overall direction of the company strategy. The company seems to focus heavily on remaking old titles with minimal improvements.

Sony Keeps Taking Two Steps Backwards One Step Forward

The lackluster launch ofUntil Dawnon PS5 is shocking when compared toConcord, a game that bombed so badly Sony had to offer full refunds and pull it from sale just two weeks after its release.

Despite being a cult favorite on PS4, the remake has gone downthe same road of failure, possibly due to poor marketing and technical problems that players were quick to point out.

According to the report fromTrueTrophies,Until Dawn’splayer count at launch was a staggering 28.6% lower thanConcord’s, making its performance one of the worst titles on the company’s platform this year.

The problems with the PS5 version of the remake were not limited to player numbers. From a technical perspective, the game suffered from issues that plagued its launch across both PS5 and PC. On Steam, it debuted with just over 2,600 concurrent players.

Helldivers 2 Shouldn’t Win Game of the Year Because We Can’t Let Sony Get Away With It

One of the main reasonsUntil Dawnperformed so poorly is likely its price point. It wasn’t the best decision to charge a full $60 for the remake, a steep price for a game that many players have already played before.

How Are We Getting This Many Remakes and None of Them AreBloodborne?

The game’s marketing, or lack thereof, has also played a significant role in its downfall. It launched around the same time as theSilent Hill 2remake, a title that received far more attention and marketing from Sony. This is a striking contrast to how successful remakes likeResident Evil 4andFinal Fantasy VIIhave been handled.

The thing is, this misstep comes afterthe wholeConcordsituation. The failed hero shooter was meant to ride the wave of live-service games likeFortniteandOverwatch. But despite taking eight years to develop, it was pulled from the market just two weeks after release due to poor sales and even worse player retention.

The company has more remakes on the horizon, including the highly anticipatedHorizon Zero Dawnremaster. But if that’s going to be more of what we’ve already seen then fans are already ready to call the company out.

The live service game made with Firewalk Studios was an over-priced, underwhelming product that barely found an audience. Its peak player count on PC was just 697, making it one of the company’s biggest commercial failures in its history.
